Deacons Ministry

Then the Twelve summoned the whole company of the disciples and said, “It would not be right for us to give up preaching about God to wait on tables. Therefore, brothers select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and wisdom, whom we can appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the preaching ministry.” Acts 6:2-4 (HCSB)

As our churches grow, it becomes increasingly more important for each church to callout Godly men, to work and serve alongside their pastor. These should be men of good report who are spiritual and have Godly wisdom, not to boss or run the church, but to fill the ministerial gap. The pastor simply cannot spend a lot of time meeting personal needs of the congregation, especially as the congregation grows larger.

The WV Convention of Southern Baptists staff is available to train and encourage those laymen that the church has set aside to serve in this capacity. Whether it be in an annual retreat setting or several times throughout the year, deacons need to be reminded to be sensitive to the physical as well as spiritual needs of the church families. One of the best ways to organize this ministry is through the “Deacon Ministry Family Plan.”
