Scholarship Ministry
PURPOSE: to provide scholarship grants to West Virginia Southern Baptist church members who are enrolled in college or seminary and who are studying in preparation for work in a church ministry vocation or as a missionary.
PLAN: Since this is the 40 anniversary of the state convention, ideas for giving are built around that theme.
GOAL: To increase the Snedden Scholarship Fund from its current $13,000 level to over $200,000 by the end of the year 2020. The official goal is $202,020.
4000 people give $4 =$16,000
400 people give $40 = 16,000
400 people give $100 = 40,000
100 people give $400 = 40,000
40 people give $1,000 = 40,000
10 people give $4,000 = 40,000
4 people give $10,000 = 40,000

4954 people $232,600
A church may want to pick a particular Sunday during the year that they would emphasize the Fund and encourage giving on that day.
BACKGROUND:
The John I. Snedden (pictured right) Scholarship Fund was established in 1979 by the West Virginia Convention of Southern Baptists. The scholarship was to honor John Snedden for his many years of work in helping to organize and then to lead the West Virginia Convention of Southern Baptists.
The purpose of the Fund is to provide scholarship money for students in college or seminary who are preparing for service in a church vocation. In the fall of 2010, Immanuel Baptist Association decided to transfer the funds from the Ray Slaughter Scholarship Fund to the Snedden Scholarship Fund. The Slaughter Fund was to honor Ray Slaughter for his many years of tireless work to help establish and promote the work of the churches in West Virginia, and the new convention.
The interest from the Fund is used to provide the scholarship monies. A Selection Committee chooses the winners of the grant. Each spring, a letter describing the Fund and an application is sent to each pastor. Each pastor then passes the information along to qualifying students who may want to apply. There is only about $13,000 in the principle now. This greatly limits the amount of money that can be awarded each year.
“I would like to see the principle at $200,000, or more,” said Greg Wrigley, the West Virginia Convention of Southern Baptists office director for the Foundation.
“That would give us about $10,000 each year we could divide among the applicants, instead of four or five hundred dollars.”
All contributions are tax deductable.
