WV Disaster Relief Responds to Severe Flooding

February 17, 2025

Severe storms, tornadoes, and historic flooding struck parts of West Virginia and the Appalachian region on February 15, causing multiple deaths and widespread destruction.

On Saturday, February 17, Governor Patrick Morrisey declared a State of Emergency for Boone, Lincoln, and Wayne counties, later expanding it to include Cabell, Greenbrier, Kanawha, Logan, Mercer, McDowell, Mingo, Raleigh, Summers, and Wyoming counties. The hardest-hit areas include McDowell, Mingo, and Mercer counties, where major flooding damaged homes, roads, and infrastructure, forcing evacuations and leaving thousands without power. With historic flooding levels in the Tug Fork and Bluestone Rivers, emergency shelters have been set up in multiple locations, including Reclamation Church in McDowell County, to assist displaced residents.

West Virginia Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (WVDR) teams are actively assessing damage and preparing response efforts as conditions allow. All WV Southern Baptist Disaster Relief ministry areas are on standby, and we are working with churches that have opened as emergency shelters and warming centers to serve their communities, especially as freezing temperatures threaten those without power.

One of the most immediate ways to help is by giving. Your generosity directly supports flood recovery efforts, emergency supplies, and relief teams serving affected communities. Through your support, WV Southern Baptists are sharing the gospel, meeting physical needs, and bringing lasting hope in the name of Christ.

If your church or community has been affected, please contact the WVCSB state office at info@wvcsb.org or 304.757.0944. You may also reach out to Roy Polmanteer, WV Disaster Relief Coordinator, at roy@wvcsb.org or 304.759.8858.

WVDR exists to bring help, hope, and healing in Jesus’ name. By equipping and mobilizing volunteers, we meet urgent needs and make Jesus known in and through West Virginia. No matter the cost or challenge, we are called to respond with compassion and action.

Thank you for your prayers and generosity as we respond together as a family on mission.
